TRIKALA

Trikala was built where ancient Trikke used to be, the famous home of the Healing God Asclepius.
The river Lithaios is what gives the city its picturesque look.

In Trikala you can visit the old city and the Varousi district,
the medieval fortress and the clock tower (that offer a stunning view).
The Osman Shah Mosque or Kursum Mosque, at the entrance of the city, in Karditsis street, south of the old prison, is the only Islamic monument left. It dates back to the 16th century. One of the prominent examples of Trikala cultural heritage, it is protected by UNESCO.

In the city centre you can also visit:

  • The Trikala Municipal Folklore Museum (Gavriilidis street)
  • and the Municipal Library.
  • river Lithaios and the Central Bridge.
  • The Hill of Profitis Elias, with its zoo, that hosts tigers, chinchillas, iguanas, emu, ostriches, horses, deer and several bird species.
  • The Train Station, at the end of Asklipios street. It was built in 1886 by the French construction company that was constructing the railways while Harilaos Trikoupis was the prime minister.
